debate. senate majority leader harry reid announcing the assault weapons ban authored by california senator dianne feinstein will not be included in the democratic gun control legislation that currently is working its way through the chamber. instead reid says feinstein's proposal will have, quote, an opportunity for a vote, possibly as a separate amendment. now this effort was sparked by the newtown school shooting in december and since then, we have seen a surge in applications for gun permits across this country. according to the fbi we saw a record 19 1/2 million background checks for firearms last year. nearly three million of them coming in december alone. that is the most for any month on record. and more than 7 million from december through february. that is a 54% increase from the previous year. this national trend is echoed in the microcosm of newtown, connecticut. where law enforcement say they have seen the pace of applications for gun permits double. so what does this all mean for the gun control debate, an effort going forward? joining me fox news political analyst jua

to move forward? it is significant that it is harry reid. prided himself on the support he received from the nra. he was able to use the support of gun rights groups to defeat in aepublican opponents difficult race. he has been reluctant to support gun control throughout the years. since the newtown shooting, he has been largely silent on the issue. it has been a big question on what harry reid would support on the floor of the senate. the fact he has introduced background checks is significant. has beennne feinstein an advocate on the assault weapons ban and something she has worked on for a long time. thebig was the defeat of assault weapons ban, and take us behind the scenes. it was totally expected. i think ever since the newtown shooting, we knew there was momentum building for gun this hugegislation, popular support around the country for that measure. the band has been questionable, partly because you are taking away the rights of ordinary citizens to own a certain kind of gun that they currently own. would be banned under this legislation. it was just not clear that they would be

. senate majority leader harry reid has announced that he will in the main gun bill headed to the senate floor include safety bill that requires background check for all gun buyers, make gun trafficking a federal crime, and help schools upgrade their security. those are all key proposals that are long overdue, especially the background checks. that's key. but some critical measures have been left out. the assault weapons ban, limit on high-capacity imagimagazines new mental health bills have all been dropped. though they still get voted on as amendments, they won't be in the main bill. when those votes come, we'll need our lawmakers to do the right thing and show political courage. that's what vice president's message was today when he appeared with new york mayor michael bloomberg and relatives of newtown, connecticut. at one point, he spoke directly to the parents of a teacher who lost her life trying to protect her students. >> think about newtown. think about newtown. think about how many of these children or teachers may be alive today had he had to reload three times as many times
